Offline support
« on: June 17, 2012, 04:50:05 PM »
Hi,

when staying abroad, I ussually don’t roam data as it costs fortune, especially when downloading maps. So, I am looking for a solution, which would provide full off-line support for geocaching. I mean by “full support”:

1)   Bulk load of cache data – currently implemented, but without images. As I have no data connection at “the place”, I have no chance to follow links
2)   Bulk load if map tiles – it would be great, when map tiles surrounding imported cache would be preloaded as well instead of manual shifting the live map
3)   Off-line logging – it would enable to log my visit on place without data connection and once I am on a WiFi, all logs would be sent to GC site

I know e.g. images are doable via GSAC and GPX import, but why to use other tools and to spend hours by preparation, when it can be done by one click in the application.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the great application, which Neongeo definettly is!

All of these features are implemented in Neongeo already, except for some of the image handling you'd like.

In that case, sorry, for my stupidity. Please, could you point me to a place in manual or anywhere else, where is described how I can specify, what maps should be imported along with cache bulk import and where is described, how off-line logs work? Marek

I'm pretty sure the basics are easy if you're a premium GS member
create a PQ of the caches/areas you want to visit, load neongeo, click info>profile and download the PQ
Then...
click Data> menu button>offline map wizard>ok>chose map server and zoom level (higher is better so 17/18) and there you go, the app should grab detailed mapping around the area of the caches, and lower detail surrounding that (I think)
Logging can be performed by making field notes, which you can upload once you have connection again.
Be sure to go into your phone settings>delay and turn screen timeout to Never before downloading the maps, else I think it pauses once the screen blanks off.
You can turn on airplane mode on your phone (which cuts off all mobile connection, including data) just to test that it all works offline, probably worth enabling that mode once abroad just to be sure.
