Welcome to the Neongeo Wiki

Neongeo is a commercial Android app for the outdoor sport/game of "Geocaching".

The program is specific to Groundspeak's Geocaching website, the world's largest repository of geocaches. Neongeo requires either a basic (free, limited) or premium (paid, feature-rich) membership at www.geocaching.com to operate.

PLEASE NOTE: Neongeo uses Groundspeak's official Geocaching Live API to legally acquire its geocache data. Groundspeak has imposed a limit of 3 detailed cache downloads per 24 hours for BASIC members … This is NOT a Neongeo limitation. For more information see the Geocaching Live API Limits.

Using Neongeo, you can:

  1. Look up nearby geocaches, and download complete information about these caches → Downloading Caches
    • These can be “live” real-time updates in the field via your wireless data plan, or
    • Previously created searches using geocaching.com's “pocket query” functionality, or
    • Previously created GPX files imported from 3rd party software (like GSAK)
  2. Review information about the caches to decide which ones you'd like to search for → Reviewing Cache Information
  3. Navigate to the geocache using maps, aerial imagery, and tools such as a compass or radar/homing view → Navigating to Caches
  4. Refine your cache search using the cache description, hints, and previous finder's logs → Reviewing Cache Information
  5. Log the results of your search either as a log entry or a field note with a custom signatureLogging Caches
  6. Identify and log “trackables” in the field → Trackables

Additional Features Include the ability to:

  1. Add your own navigation waypoints to the map → Using Waypoints
  2. Use corrected coordinates (such as puzzle solutions) → Puzzles and Corrected Coordinates
    • From your Personal Cache Notes on geocaching.com, or
    • From 3rd party imported GPX files (i.e. GSAK)
  3. Select from a number of stock and custom map data providers → Map Servers
  4. Manage your “favorites” selections in the geocaching database → Managing Favorites
  5. See fellow Neongeo users and send messages to them using Follow Me
  6. Create offline maps for caching in areas without cell service → Offline Maps
  7. Organize your caches into multiple cache databases → Databases

Title Page Overview

After opening Neongeo and authenticating your account at geocaching.com, the title screen shows links to the 4 main “pages” within the program:

On the Title Page you also have three Menu options:

  1. Quick search - Allows you to search for a cache by Name or GC Code
    • Note: When searching by name, there is a proximity limit within the API (If the cache is too far away, it will not be found)
  2. Database - Opens a Databases dialog which allows you to create different cache databases and select which one is active
    • Note: The same map servers and offline map tiles are shared between all cache databases
  3. Message History - Opens the Messages Page which allows you to view and clear your Follow Me message history

These guides will help you understand how to use all the basic and advanced features of NeonGeo. Generally, these guides assume that you have a working knowledge of your android device, and basic geocaching concepts. For an introduction to geocaching, this guide is a good starting point.
